Ravil Bukharaev

Ravil Bukharaev, writer, radio journalist and scholar in the field of cultural, social and political history of the Islamic peoples of the former USSR, was born in Kazan in 1951. He graduated in mathematics from Kazan University and studied computer science at Moscow State University. Bukharaev is the author of a dozen books of poetry, in Kazan Tartar, Russian, English and Hungarian. 

In 1996 he was nominated for  the Russian Booker Prize for the best Russian novel of the year. His recent books in English are: The Model of Tatarstan under President Mintimer Shaimiev, 1999; Historical Anthology of Kazan Tatar Verse(with David J Matthews), 2000; Islam in Russia: The Four Seasons, 2000. Bukharayev has lived in London since 1992. The poems from Quest: Misty Sonnets were written in English.
